Like a moth drawn to a flame . . . Have you ever repeatedly made choices you regretted—like dating the same type of person again and again with the same problematic results—but you weren’t sure why? Or maybe you have repeatedly re-experienced the same life dilemma—like often feeling rejected or feeling like you can never win. If you have ever asked yourself ‘why does this keep happening to me’ or ‘why can’t I get what I want,’ you may be dealing with your own version of an unwanted self-fulfilling prophecy.
You’ll find unwanted self-fulfilling prophecies more-often-than-not at the heart of our most painful issues even though we may not be consciously aware of these beliefs. These faulty internal beliefs (FIBs), acted on as though true, are learned through the interpretation of life-circumstances and then become a part of one’s belief system usually beginning in childhood. Because we so powerfully accept them as truth, we then operate from that skewed reality resulting in choices that impact our destiny. Do not underestimate the powerful force resulting from these deeply-rooted faulty internal beliefs. FIBs remain rooted in our beliefs by feeding off painful emotions. When the pain is triggered is when we most powerfully accept FIBs as truth. Not only do these beliefs remain unchallenged: With each similar painful experience, these faulty beliefs are actually reinforced. So in addition to being self-fulfilling, they are self-perpetuating too. These self-fulfilling prophecies are a subconscious force that drives us off course from where we want to be—but you can stop them from continuing to make you miserable.
Fortunately, unwanted self-fulfilling prophecies can be de-activated from one’s life script. It’s a challenging process that involves identifying and replacing irrational beliefs with rational beliefs [i.e. the real truth] while working to de-activate the triggers and heal the painful memories. In my counseling practice in Aurora Colorado, I help clients to de-activate and reprogram the painful self-fulfilling prophecies into more adaptive, healthy, and winning life strategies.
